Is another lyric from the song Wildflower. I have a pocket full of dreams some of them I have realized and some are still dreams waiting to take flight.
One of my dreams was to own a horse. During my childhood there was glimpses of a good father from my Dad. He once bought a Welsh pony for my brother and I. My brother fell off and never wanted to ride again. I however wanted to ride and so I did except the Welsh was a bit to big for me at the moment so my dad traded for a Shetland pony named Goldie.
Shetland ponies can be mean sometimes and I remember one day while riding Goldie she got spooked and bucked me off. She even stepped on my stomach. My Dad said get back on her and show her who is boss. So I did. And I was hooked for life. Not sure what happened but at some point my Dad sold Goldie and I was so sad. But once you ride and feel the power you have over an animal twice your size it’s a high that never goes away.
When I got my first job I found a stable in my neighborhood that had horses for sale. So I stopped one day and the owner of Almosta Ranch was a man by the name of Larry Siegel. He asked me how much money I had and I told him and he laughed. He explained to me that owning a horse was an expensive proposition. And the money I had wasn’t quite enough. He did offer me an opportunity though. He said take riding lessons here and we will go from there. So that is what I did. I took lessons every week. When Larry saw that I was serious about my goal he gave me another opportunity. He hired me to work part time helping the instructors with the girl scout troops that came for their horsemanship badges. With that income and from my regular job I was able to buy my first horse. He sold me Rhett Butler the chestnut Appaloosa I had my first lesson on.
I owned Rhett for 3 years. It was the best three years of my life. I found peace when I rode and I did it everyday. But then I met a guy who didn’t share my passion for horses and I sold my horse. Should have kept the horse though.
